Condo Retaining Wall Remediation
CHALLENGE: Previous failing retaining wall in tight site
SOLUTION: Helical Tiebacks installed by hand
This wood 6x6 retaining wall was only five years old when it began to fail. Only a perpendicular wall running back to the building’s foundation kept this wall from failing even sooner. The lowest level is five feet and the next two tiers are 3-4 feet high.
The engineers’ design called for four foot spacing on the lowest wall and nine foot spacing on the two upper walls. A total of 71 tiebacks were installed on this project – 16 feet in depth with a threaded termination – and a custom bracket design to fit outside of the wall. The engineer designed a 10 kip working 20 kip ultimate tieback.
This job was particularly difficult because there was not enough room to get a piece of equipment behind the building. Each pier had to be installed with a 5,000 pound hand drill. The new piers also can now be used in any future replacement or remediation on the wall.
