The Traverse City plant reaches a milestone

TRAVERSE CITY, MICH., August 5, 2009 – Team Elmer’s has sold, mixed and poured its millionth cubic yard of concrete out of its Traverse City plant.

The “magic number” was reached during a Michigan Department of Transportation project in Glen Lake.

Although Team Elmer’s has been operating for over five decades, the company only began producing concrete at its own plant currently located off M-37/US-31 in Traverse City in 1990. The million yards have been produced and poured since that date.

A few interesting statistics related to the milestone:

  • The first yard of concrete that Team Elmer’s poured from its own plant was at the Dennos Museum at Northwestern Michigan College during its construction in 1990.
  • John Meddaugh, who serves as the quality assurance officer for concrete, has served in that capacity since 1990, and has overseen the mixing of all one million cubic yards.
  • One million cubic yards of concrete is the equivalent of 2,083 lineal miles of B-2 concrete curbing, the same type poured on many Michigan Highways, which would stretch from Traverse City to Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • The company’s concrete is used in dozens of residential and commercial applications, including driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and building foundations. Some unique concrete applications include underwater buoy anchors, concrete countertops, boat ramps, and decorative stamped concrete.
  • In 1990 when the plant opened, it was the only Team Elmer’s concrete plant. Today, the company operates thirteen concrete plants serving Northern Lower Michigan.
  • The company’s professionals have handled concrete projects at many major construction projects in the area, including both Traverse City high schools and middle schools, several churches and elementary schools, the Grand Traverse Mall, Munson Medical Center, the Park Place Hotel, and many more.

Team Elmer’s, a family owned company since 1956, specializes in site development, including excavation, earth moving, underground utility installation, retaining wall construction, directional boring, manhole rehabilitation, aggregate production, concrete ready-mix, asphalt installation (commercial and residential), milling, and crane/rigging, among other specialties. Today, Traverse City, Mich.-based Team Elmer’s has grown to include over 300 skilled personnel.
