Kudos earned for City of Manistee storm sewer repair

TRAVERSE CITY, MICH., MARCH 18, 2010 – A City of Manistee project completed by Team Elmer’s has earned the company the 2009 Sprayroq Project of the Year award. Team Elmer’s has taken home the honors three of the last four years.

The award-winning project took place in Manistee, where the City had discovered two sinkholes occurring along the edge of railroad tracks on the south side of town. The cause was determined to be a 52-inch collapsing double-walled brick storm sewer—installed in the early 1900s—that ran along the tracks and discharged into the Manistee River. The City and Abonmarche Engineering enlisted Team Elmer's to complete the emergency rehabilitation of sewer line.

"Team Elmer's provided data on a possible solution and Sprayroq appeared to be an all-around good choice. Compared to other options it was cost-effective, supplied data showed it to be long-lasting, and the process seemed logical," said Jim Johnson of Abonmarche.

Access to the work area was grueling, as the discharge point was out in the river, under a railroad bridge and down a 20-foot embankment. Trucks couldn't get close enough, so John Prescott of Team Elmer’s and his crew utilized manual labor techniques. First, debris was removed by hand from the confined space with a cart and five gallon buckets. The damaged brick was then removed, replaced and mortared into place. Crews smoothed out the surface to an even coat and then finally applied the Sprayroq—without collapsing the rest of the line.

"Team Elmer's was very professional to work with and we are happy to have the project completed," said Johnson.

Team Elmer’s was recognized for the award last month at the Sprayroq Certified Partners meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to the Manistee project, Team Elmer’s has utilized Sprayroq in dozens of communities throughout the Midwest.
