Digging Up State St / Fireworks Prep

Fireworks display over the bay

Another Independence Day celebration has come and gone, and hopefully you had the chance to sit down and enjoy the fireworks display over Grand Traverse Bay. If not, you have a second chance to view the National Cherry Festival's grand finale over Grand Traverse Bay this Saturday, July 11, 2015, at dusk. Have you ever thought about the preparation that goes into the show?

Each year the National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Boom-Boom club partner to bring in the experts, Bruce Tyree of Great Lakes Fireworks. Tyree spends many hours, selecting, designing, and rigging the pyrotechnic show. Team Elmer's donates a 110 ton crane, front-end loader, and fill sand to assist in the fireworks preparation several days prior to the show.

But how is it done? As instructed by GLF, the crane operator will set the barge into the Grand Traverse Bay near the Greilickville Marina.

Although the smaller pyrotechnics are carried aboard by the crew, the larger ones need a little more attention. A large dumpster, donated by American Waste, is loaded with the fireworks launch tubes and held in place with fill sand. The crane then picks the dumpster and loads it onto floating barge with the rest.

Now all the crew needs is to motor the barge out open water and spark the fuses when it's time for the show!

Diggin' Deep on State Street

Crews have been hard at work in beautiful Charlevoix, MI, replacing underground water and sewer lines on State Street. The project, which spans 3 city blocks, is coming to a close after roughly 3 months of work.

Typically this pipe installation would take place 4-5 feet deep, however, this particular project calls for water main and sanitary sewer nearly 20 feet deep! The added depth raises the stakes, bringing up new challenges and potential safety concerns. However, Team Elmer's crews took added precautions to ensure the job got done and everyone went home safe each night.

This episode of the Team Elmer's Update dives in deep to the 20 foot trenches to get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to complete a project such as this.

Additional crews continue work less than a mile away from the State Street site in Charlevoix. The City of Charlevoix Airport is getting a new apron and taxiway section, while another crew is creating the Lake to Lake trail, a limestone gravel trail for the City of Charlevoix and Charlevoix Township.
