Help Solve a Local Mystery + An Update from Pinky

"Pinky" delivers more than just concrete

By now, you've probably seen her out and about on the way to a job site or at one of many local events. Since May, "Pinky," our pink concrete mixer has been touring the area and raising awareness and dollars for cancer support wherever she goes.

Pinky enjoys Lope for Hope at NW Michigan Fairgrounds this July.

The campaign is reaching the end of the road and we are so appreciative of your involvement! Check out these numbers (as of October 15):

Kudos to homeowner and regular customer, Dan Irving. He's requested Pinky three times and each time rounded up his total as a donation to the cause. Thanks, Dan!

Encourage your friends and family to become a new fan on Facebook or a new follower on Twitter and Team Elmer's will donate $5.00 to the cancer support units at Munson Healthcare. But don't delay... We'll be turning off our counter on October 31!

And don't forget, every time someone reports a sighting of the pink mixer, Team Elmer’s will donate $1.00. If you post a photo, Team Elmer’s will donate $2.00.

The pink mixer is part of Team Elmer’s initiative to raise up to $15,000 for the cancer support units at Munson Healthcare. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated monthly to individual units such as hospice care/hospice house, patient needs fund, women's cancer fund, and nurse continuing education for cancer patient care.

The perfect circle: 47 feet tall

Imagine drawing a perfect circle. Now picture yourself doing so in the dark…and you're holding your pencil with your toes. Sounds tough, right? A recent Team Elmer's earth retention project was just as tough.

The City of Benton Harbor was updating its water filtration plant to boost water processing from 10 million gallons per day to 12 million per day.

The plan called for a raw intake system adjacent to the plant that would divert water from underground pipes and above-ground cylinders--each designed to "pre-filter" and process 6 million gallons of Lake Michigan water. The water would then be pumped to a new filter system within the water treatment plant.

Team Elmer's was tasked with creating the circular bank retention and sheet piling that would then allow the other contractors to build the pipe and pre-filter system. In a typical 'straight' job, these sheet piles are driven one at a time. But in this case, it was critical that the piles formed a circle that was precise, straight and plumb so the concrete cylinders could be poured against it.

The result? The Team Elmer's sheet piling gurus simultaneously pounded 47 foot tall sheet piles into the ground in a perfect 22 foot diameter circle. That's almost as tall as a five story building and wider than your living room!

The other contractors were then able to pour the concrete cylinders and will ultimately complete the upgrade to the City's plant.

Marc Felt, an Erhardt Construction project engineer, oversaw the entire project and was blown away by Scott Tebben and the rest of the Team Elmer's crew.

"Our expectations were exceeded by far. I was impressed by the controlled manner that the pilings were installed and their tolerances are maintained to this day. Not to mention Team Elmer's was accommodating to project changes that occurred while we were on-site, provided a quick turnaround, and the crew was easy to work with."

It wasn't a typical job…but at Team Elmer's, there's no such thing!

Help find a missing Elk Rapids landmark

The Elk Rapids Garden Club is looking for a missing Blue Star Memorial marker that was placed somewhere along US-31 in Elk Rapids in the early 1950s.

The stone marker features a brass plaque and is seven feet tall, four feet wide and four feet in depth. It is unknown exactly where the marker was placed, but it is suspected that it was moved when US-31 was realigned in 1953 and then finished in 1958.

If the marker can be found, it will be rededicated. If you have any knowledge or memory of its placement, please contact Loraine Mottern of the Elk Rapids Garden Club. (231) 599-2546 or loraine@torchlake.com

The Blue Star Memorial Program was developed in 1945 by the National Garden Clubs to pay tribute to the Armed Forces that defended our country in WWII. Blue Star Markers appear along designated highways across the country.
