M-113 Gets A Fresh Look • Bus Safety • Cedar Run Timelapse

Back to School: School Bus Safety

Summer vacation is over and the kids are heading back to school! Now that the school buses are on the road once again, its important to understand a few rules of the road when it comes to school bus safety.

As the kids line up for their ride to school, remember to keep their safety in mind and drive cautiously.

Here are a few tips for drivers sharing the road with the big yellow buses:

  • Give yourself extra space to stop when following a school bus
  • The flashing yellow lights come on 200 ft before their stop to warn you! Motorists are allowed to pass at this time but are urged to proceed with caution.
  • Once stopped, the bus driver will signal the flashing red lights and all traffic must stop!
  • All lanes of traffic from both directions must stop when the red lights are flashing (except when a physical barrier dividing oncoming traffic is present)

As a good rule of thumb, always drive with caution and stay patient!

M-113 Gets A Fresh Look!

This summer a 5 mile stretch of road in Kingsley, MI received some major changes! M-113 is a heavily traveled roadway that transports motorists to and from highway US-131.

Not only had the road deteriorated significantly in several areas, the current grade had presented safety issues for years. The steep hill leading into an extremely sharp curve was raised 7 feet, improving drivers' sight distance and making the area much safer for travelers.

The project lasted roughly 5 months and included tree removal for ditch and drainage improvements, 2 large fill sections to improve sight distance, and crushing and shaping 5 miles of road for a new asphalt surface.
