Creative Construction Across the Bridge

Team Elmer’s east side crews traveled to St. Ignace, just over the Mighty Mac, to completely reconstruct a one-mile stretch of I-75. It was a big job – the section of high traffic road was in very poor condition. And on top of that, the crew was working away from their home base and aggregate sources.

The three-month project started last summer and the crew was ready to take on the first challenges, getting the equipment to the construction site. The excavators had to be disassembled just to get across the Mackinac Bridge due to weight restriction of 144,000 pounds. Choosing to recycle existing material on-site to re-use in the project, crushing equipment was required to make 22-A and 23-A material. With bridge weight restrictions, a barge was required to bring our concrete crusher to the job site.

The sand pit was over an hour away, so logistical planning was needed to supply a steady stream of trucks bringing in the sand base material.

And since we’re problem solvers here at Team Elmer’s, we used a nearby site for concrete recycling. This made it much easier to use the crushed concrete at the job site for the aggregate base.

When we say we’ll get a job done, we’ll get creative and we’ll get it done.
